Frequently Asked Questions about HCRT...
If the following information does not answer your questions about the club or our new website, please check out Contact Us and/or Board of Directors under About the Club on the menu.
- Why a new website?
Our old website was developed and maintained using FrontPage and was hosted on Yahoo - it was about as basic as it could be. Our new website is hosted by a commercial website provider (AlumniMagnet) that specializes in serving alumni communities. This feature-rich environment will make it possible for HCRT to do more to bring Harvard alumni together. Going forward, you will be able to pay dues and buy event tickets on line. Your membership directory will now be an on-line directory and you will have the ability to update your own profile and determine which items to share with other members.
- Why did I get an email inviting me to renew my membership in HCRT?
You are on our email list of area Harvard alumni. You are by definition a verified member of the Harvard community. If you use the default password sent to you in the announcement, you will be able to access a user account that is waiting for you. This will permit you to pay your dues online without waiting for the Membership Rewview Board to process your application (if you apply for membership in any other way, you will have to pass through the review process).
- But I have never been a dues-paying member, why does the website say that my membership expired Jan 1, 2005?
If you logged into our new website in response to an email message you received from the club, you were awarded an expired previous "membership" to make it easier for you to pass through the gate. Otherwise you would have to wait for a member of our Membership Review Board to confirm your eligibility. You received the aforementioned email because you are listed with the HAA and are, therefore, automatically eligible for membership in our club.
- How did the club get my name and email address?
If you have been an active member during the last decade or so, we have information about you in our club database - usually information that you provided. Otherwise, the information was given to us by the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) for use in soliciting for membership and advertising major club-related events. If you do not wish to receive emails from the club in the future, you can unsubscribe from our mailing list.
- What is the on-line membership directory? Who can view it?
In the past, one of the most popular benefits of being an active member of HCRT has been the printed membership directory distributed as the "littel red book." From now on, the membership directory will be available as a searchable, online list of area alumni based on information previously provided to HCRT or to the HAA. The only people who will be able to view this information will be current (i.e., dues-paying) members of HCRT who, by definition, are verified members of the Harvard community of alumni, students, parents and surviving spouses. In other words, the same people who can access this information on the HAA website. Once you are a registered user of this site, you will be able to update this information and determine whether to share all (or any) of it with other users.
- Who is eligible for membership in HCRT?
Alumni of Harvard College, Harvard University graduate schools and programs, parents of Havard undergraduates, and surviving spouses of former club members are eligible for membership (see Membership/Join). Also, current Harvard undergraduates can register for free membership in the club.
- Can I pay by check instead of on line by credit card?
Yes. If you prefer, you can join/renew the old-fashioned way. Download a membership information form, fill it out and mail it in with your check. This is a lot more trouble for you and for us, but we want you to be comfortable with your transactions with the club. You will find a link to the membership information form on our Membership/Join page.
